More than 12,000 acres in Jefferson and Gilpin Counties has 35 miles of hiking trails through lush aspen groves, pine forests, mountain meadows for hikers, bikers and horseback riders. A Visitors Center is open year-round at the southeast entrance of the park. There are two campgrounds with toilets, hot showers and laundry facilities. Another 20 sites allow only tents and there are four back country Appalachian trail-hut tradition shelters that can sleep up to six people. There are also opportunities to fish and hunt.

This 5,600-acre recreation area that include a 1,450 surface-acre lake. The Jefferson-Douglas county line runs through the middle of the lake created by a dam built in 1976.
Over 340 species of birds have been sighted at Chatfield, most notably great blue herons. Many more watchable wildlife live in the area including beaver, muskrats, coyote, deer, fox and rabbit. Sail and motor boating, water skiing, fishing and a swimming area, miles of hike-bike-equestrian trails, and handicapped accessibility make this one of the most popular parks in Colorado.
There are 197 campsites for RVs and 121 “full hook up” sites available. Radio controlled model airplanes and hot air balloons add even more variety.
