The area grew quickly since Golden became the first Territorial Capitol of Colorado in 1861. Since 1972, citizens have gladly paid a one-half-cent sales tax that has preserved 55,000 acres of JeffCo Open Space with 135 miles of trails for hikers, bicycles, equestrians, and nature lovers. Nearly 40% of JeffCo is preserved as city, county, state, and national parks and wildlife habitat. In the central foothills, the Lariat Loop Historic & Scenic Byway enriches living in Greater Golden, the I-70 Corridor, Evergreen, and Bear Creek Canyon.
